Manhattan-based hair colorist Rachel Bodt works with celebs (her clients include Michelle Williams, Emily Blunt and Tilda Swinton) and on campaigns and shows for Saint Laurent, NARS, Revlon and Balenciaga. Chances are you’ve seen her work in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Allure. If you live (or travel to) NYC, you can visit her at the Cutler Salon (word to the wise: book well in advance) in Soho or book her for shoots through Home Agency. Here, she highlights (no pun intended!) the key color trends for the winter season. With the holiday season upon us, you might think of asking your colorist to try one of these new color trends to freshen up your party look. (Follow Rachel on Instagram: @rachel_bodt.)
Rachel Bodt’s 5 Color Trends to Try Now
These are soft tiny highlights woven throughout the hair to give the hair an all over creamy effect with slightly lighter ends. There is no strong line of demarcation so the overall look is sexy and effortless. Think Jessica Alba or Olivia Wilde
The days of strong dip dyed ombre may be long gone, but hair color always looks more natural with a little bit of a shadow. Highlighting the whole head and toning just the first inch with a softer slightly darker color on the roots gives a more natural effect. I always like to leave the hairline out the first few minutes so you get a stronger punch of color around the face. Think Khloe Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen or Cara Delevingne.
Return of Red
We have seen a huge comeback with reds; the most important thing is picking the right red for your skin tone. Second in importance is keeping in mind the maintenance required with the red as it is the most volatile color. If you can commit to spending more time in the salon to keep your color on point the results can be stunning. Whether your goal is to be as bright as Karen Elson or a soft as Amy Adams, there is a red out there for almost everyone.
Go for Golden
Most people think gold is brassy or that it won’t look good on them, but that’s not the case. If you have always been blonde and are looking to change it up a bit, think about warming up your strands with a root shadow and an all-over gloss or adding a warm blonde highlight to your locks. This is such a great thing to do now in the cooler months when we start to lose our tan. It also helps make hair look super lush and shiny. Think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley or Gigi Hadid.
The (new) Beachy Blonde
Blonde is always in style but you always want to make sure its on trend by keeping it modern and fresh! The tone and placement is really everything. I always recommend looking at celebrities that have similar skin color as you so you have a better idea. Think Jennifer Lawrence or Jennifer Lopez.
